Japanese Days for Marco Ventoruzzo

THE LAW PROFESSOR HAS BEEN TEACHING IN TOKYO IN THE SUMMER

The Japanese legal system is fascinating for a European scholar, because it mixes elements of German, French and American law transplanted, however, in an original, long and rich local tradition. Learning about it has been one of the upsides of spending part of August teaching in Tokyo for Marco Ventoruzzo (Bocconi’s Department of Legal Studies and Penn State Law).

Ventoruzzo was invited by the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law to teach in a summer program on comparative business law. The program was attended by law students, attorneys and managers from Japan and other Asian countries, and in addition to Ventoruzzo instructors included Mark Ramsayer from Harvard Law School, Harald Baum from the Max Planck in Germany, and other professors and practitioners from both European and Asian law schools. This diverse group engaged in a lively comparative discussion on key issues of corporate governance, from proxy voting to the composition of the board of directors.

"It has been a unique opportunity to take a peek at Japanese law - Ventoruzzo reported - but also more generally at the complex culture of this fascinating and welcoming country. The Japanese system of higher education is known for being very selective, and I found students not only extremely diligent and brilliant, but animated by a genuine and refreshing interest for foreign legal and economic systems."
