PhD Day. Introducing the School of International Interchange

FIVE DOCTORAL PROGRAMS FOR A SCHOOL WHICH ALSO OPENS DOORS OUTSIDE OF ACADEMIA AND WHICH OFFERS TO ITS GRADUATES THE OPPORTUNITY TO EMBARK ON A CAREER ABROAD. THE SCHOOL WILL INTRODUCE ITSELF DURING PHD DAY, ON 21 SEPTEMBER

International and interdisciplinary are the best adjectives to describe the atmosphere of the PhD School at Bocconi University. The School will be presented on 21 September (5.30pm, aula magna Gobbi), in occasion of the PhD Day, the annual event during which, among other things, the Dean and Coordinators will introduce to students and graduates the 5 different PhD programs: Business Administration and Management, Economics and Finance, Legal Studies, Public Policy and Administration, Statistics.

"About 55% of those who obtained a PhD at Bocconi in the past five years work
abroad”, says Pierpaolo Battigalli, Dean of the PhD School. In addition to the international character of the School, which is clear when you consider that 72% of the applications submitted last year came from graduates who studied in foreign universities, one of the advantages of the Bocconi PhD School is its interdisciplinary focus, “enabled by the physical proximity with experts in different fields, all fields that still center around the two main pillars of economics and entrepreneurship”, continues Battigalli.

“The Bocconi PhD opens different doors”, says Raffaele Conti, who after graduating with honors in Barcelona, decided to come back to Italy, where he obtained a PhD in Business Administration and Management at Bocconi in 2011. About 51% of those who obtained a PhD at Bocconi between 2011 and 2015 have continued to work in academia, some in Italy, some others abroad. 41% of PhDs have instead started a career within other national or international institutions, while the remaining 8% today work in central banks. "I have taken the university path," continues Conti, who now teaches Strategy and Innovation at the Catòlica Lisbon School of Business & Economics. "One of the pros of the Bocconi PhD is the opportunity of experiencing teaching in English; lecturing to international students has never been a problem for me. I'm in love with my job because it allows me to be independent, to choose my research topics, and to decide to teach wherever I want in the world".
