International Law Scholars Take Their Research Around the World

SOUTH AFRICA YESTERDAY, THE US TODAY, JAPAN TOMORROW. BOCCONI'S GROUP OF INTERNATIONAL LAW SCHOLARS, WHICH INCLUDES GIORGIO SACERDOTI AND OTHER FACULTY MEMBERS, PHD CANDIDATES AND FORMER PHD STUDENTS, ARE PARTICIPATING IN VARIOUS INTERNATIONAL EVENTS AND CONFERENCES

2016 has been an exciting year for Bocconi’s group of international law scholars, who have already presented their research at various international seminars and conferences. The next appointment is set for Washington, where the American Society of International Law Conference will be held on 30 September and 1 October. “Anna de Luca and Leonardo Borlini, two faculty members, along with Ilaria Espa, a former PhD student in International Law and Economics, will present their work at that event,” explains Giorgio Sacerdoti, Professor Emeritus and Professor of International Trade and Investment Law. “It’s important to underline that she was not simply invited, but rather selected after a call that required candidates to propose a topic and present an abstract, in addition to sending their academic CVs.”

But the international activity of this group of faculty and researchers does not just take them to the United States: in July, faculty members Borlini and Claudio Dordi and several former PhD students, including Espa, participated as guest speakers during a biennial conference organized by the Society of International Economic Law, held in Johannesburg. Borlini and Dordi also presented a paper at the annual conference of the European Society of International Law in Riga. “At the same event, two of our PhDs, Francesco Montanaro and Viktoriia Lapa, did the same,” says Borlini. “I would like to add that last December, I was invited to give a series of lectures at the Beijing Normal University.”

“Lastly, from 14 to 27 October, de Luca and I have been invited to hold conferences at prestigious locations in Japan, such as the Japanese Society of International Economic Law in Otaru, on the island of Hokkaido, where I’ll have the honor of opening with a lecture entitled A Comparison Between Trade and Investment International Dispute Settlement,” explains Sacerdoti. “After that, there will be a seminar at Kyoto University and one at the Japanese Institute of International Business Law at the Ministry of Justice in Tokyo.” De Luca will also spend one quarter in Japan, at Nagoya University, as a visiting professor. “It will be a very intense period full of research and seminars, during which, along with a Japanese colleague, I’d also like to focus on the topic of free trade, including a chapter on the investments Europe is negotiating with Japan,” says the professor
