European Sociologists Meet at Bocconi

INSTITUTIONS, INEQUALITY AND SOCIAL DYNAMICS IS THE TITLE OF THE EUROPEAN CONSORTIUM FOR SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH (ECSR) 2017 CONFERENCE, WHICH WILL BRING 220 SCHOLARS TO MILAN, STARTING TOMORROW

More than 220 scholars will meet at Bocconi from 31 August until 2 September for the European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR) 2017 Conference, organized by Bocconi’s Dondena Centre for Research on Social Dynamics and Public Policy.

“The overarching themes of the 2017 ECSR Conference are Institutions, Inequality and Social Dynamics. These themes are highly relevant in today's world and are at the forefront of the European sociology research agenda”, says Letizia Mencarini, an Associate Professor of Demography at Bocconi and Chair of the Conference Organizing Committee. “At the same time, those themes lie at the heart of Dondena's original research agenda”.

What all the contributions have in common is methodology. “It’s a conference of quantitative sociology”, Prof. Mencarini says. “The use of quantitative data is both at the heart of ECSR’s activity and an imprinting for social sciences at Bocconi”. Family, demography, social mobility, inequality, education, life-course studies and labor markets are among the topics investigated in the conference papers. (CLICK HERE for the Program)

Founded in 1991, the ECSR's purpose is to promote theoretically-driven empirical research in sociology in Europe, in particular by encouraging cooperation between research centers. Currently more than 90 leading European research institutes and university departments are members of the Consortium.

“Our exciting line-up of keynote speakers includes Mario Amore (Bocconi University), Anette Eva Fasang (Humboldt University and WZB), Markus Gangl (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main), Torkild Hovde Lyngstad (University of Oslo), Ross Macmillan (Bocconi University), Hadas Mandel (Tel-Aviv University) and Melinda Mills (University of Oxford)”, Prof. Mencarini concludes.
