ScienzaNuova, the Dialogue between Philosophy and Physics Continues

IN THE LAST WEEK OF JULY, THE SECOND EDITION OF THE RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION FORUM ON THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF MODERN SCIENCE WILL BE HELD IN MERANO, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ACCADEMIA DI STUDI ITALO TEDESCHI AND WITH FUNDING FROM THE CARIPLO FOUNDATION AND BOLZANO'S SPARKASSE

With the second edition of ScienzaNuova (Merano, 22-28 July 2018), the dedicated website, the Twitter account and the Vimeo account, the contours of the research and experimentation forum on the fundamental concepts of today's sciences, presented last year on Bocconi Knowledge by one of the scientific directors, Gino Zaccaria, are becoming increasingly clear.

«We continue to research the fundamental themes of time and space from the points of view of physics and phenomenological philosophy», says Prof. Zaccaria. «This year, a part of the dialogue will focus on neurosciences and their double epistemological status, which shares its language with philosophy and its method with physics. It is interesting to see how the cognitive sciences study the formation of the 'consciousness of time' and transform it into an operative concept».

The topic of the second edition is the Esperienze del tempo e dello spazio / filosofia, fisica, neuroscienze (Experiences of Time and Space / Philosophy, Physics, Neurosciences) and the formula remains that of the first edition, far from that of the popular festival and which aims, instead, at shaping a dialoguing scientific community, already established with the first edition.

ScienzaNuova’s scientific directors are Mauro Carfora, theoretical physicist at University of Pavia, Ivo De Gennaro, moral philosopher at Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, and Gino Zaccaria, theoretical philosopher at Bocconi University.  The project is managed by Bocconi’s ASK Centre and the Accademia di Studi Italo-Tedeschi of Merano, which hosts the event. The audience is made up of about twenty doctoral students from various disciplines, coming from different Italian universities (this year also from the Politecnico di Milano). The initiative, again this year, is financed by the Cariplo Foundation, with the adding of Bolzano’s Sparkasse.

The philosophical reflection will focus, on the one hand, on Leibniz's thought, on the other on the concept of time in Aristotle's physics and in the work of the tragic poet Sophocles.
