Leonardo Borlini Wins a Leonardo Da Vinci Medal

FOR A PAPER ON HOW THE EU IS USING BILATERAL TRADE AGREEMENTS AS A TOOL TO EXPORT TRADE POLICIES

Leonardo Borlini, Assistant Professor at Bocconi’s Department of Legal Studies, has been assigned a Leonardo Da Vinci Medal by the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research, for his paper Deepening International Systems of Subsidy Control: The (Different) Legal Regimes of Subsidies in the EU Bilateral Preferential Trade Agreements, published in the Columbia Journal of European Law.
 
The Leonardo Da Vinci initiative is aimed at promoting the competencies and skills of young Italian researchers and includes funding actions for international mobility and the Medal for academic or artistic works.
 
Prof. Borlini’s paper (in joint with Claudio Dordi) shows that after the failure of the Doha Round, facing increasing difficulties in enforcing the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s discipline on subsidies, the EU has effectively used bilateral trade agreements as a tool to export trade and trade-related policies, including competition policy and control of public aid.
