Leonardo Caporarello Among the Top 100 Leaders in Education

HE RECEIVED AN AWARD TODAY AT THE GLOBAL FORUM FOR EDUCATION AND LEARNING IN DUBAI

Leonardo Caporarello, Delegate Rector for e-learning and Director of BUILT, the laboratory for innovation in learning at Bocconi University, and of its counterpart at SDA Bocconi School of Management, the Learning Lab, was acknowledged as one of the Top 100 Leaders in Education on Tuesday, 17 December, in Dubai, during the Global Forum for Education and Learning.

A gathering opportunity for scholars and education practitioners from all over the world, the Forum, with its acknowledgement, wants to recognize the ability to be agents of change in education, through scientific publications, innovative educational products, the construction of a network and dissemination within one’s own organization.

Leonardo Caporarello, Professor of Practice of Negotiation at SDA Bocconi and Lecturer at the Department of Management and Technology of the University, has been leading the Learning Lab since 2009 and BUILT since 2016. In recent years, among other things, he has coordinated the production of 1,760 educational videos, the creation of 25 online business games and simulations and 20 interactive case studies. «In the last three years, we have participated in the academic debate with more than 20 publications; we have been involved in the creation of 4 new MOOCs, reaching a total of 11, and we have designed and delivered faculty development initiatives involving more than 450 Bocconi faculty». In 2019 alone, the two laboratories completed 276 innovative teaching projects. «Everything», he explains, «is made possible by excellent teamwork, good pedagogy and a rigorous scientific-methodological approach. There is a tendency, in fact, to think of educational innovation as a technological issue, but it is not so, or at least it is only partly so. In fact, a large dose of curiosity and passion is also necessary, as well as a strong team spirit to ensure that a long-term mindset is built at the same time while achieving results in the short term».

One of the flagship projects of the two laboratories, which will shape tomorrow's teaching, is MyLearning, which aims at a strong customization of education. «The ultimate goal is the analysis of learning patterns of people with different characteristics», explains Prof. Caporarello, «and can only be achieved through continuous monitoring, aimed not at assessing individuals, but at understanding aggregated behaviors through machine learning techniques. In this way, moreover, educators will be able to anticipate the possible needs and interests of each one and will have useful indications for actions that, on the basis of the big data analysis, result to be effective. In order to achieve this, the same learning objective could be achieved by proposing different paths to individuals with different characteristics».

At an even wider level, Bocconi is considering the evolution of the didactic model, based on the concept of learning experience and not on single programs. «Teaching is not the only component of this experience», says Caporarello. «Networks, connections with internal and external stakeholders, campus, methodologies, continuous innovation and many other factors count. Finally, everything must take into account the different behaviors of different generations. Reflection is underway to define this evolution from now until 2030».
