Sonia Petrone into the Council of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics

IT'S THE FIRST TIME A SCHOLAR WORKING IN ITALY ACHIEVES THE POSITION

Sonia Petrone (Department of Decision Sciences) has been elected to the Council of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), effective since last August. It is the first time that a statistician working in Italy is elected to the IMS Council. Her election is a sign of her high international reputation and an important achievement for the Italian Statistical Society, and for Università Bocconi.

The Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) is possibly the most prestigious scientific association for probability and statistics. IMS publications include top journals such as the Annals of Statistics, the Annals of Probability, Statistical Science, and highly prestigious monograph series. The purpose of IMS is to foster the development and dissemination of the theory and applications of statistics and probability. The Institute currently has about 4,500 members in all parts of the world.

The IMS Council is elected through a process of nomination of candidates and international voting. This year, four members of the IMS Council were to be elected, out of eight nominations.

Being in the IMS Council is an important service to the scientific community, and a way to closely follow the activity of a highly prestigious scientific society such as IMS.

The Council determines the policies and supervises the affairs of IMS, in accordance with the Constitution and the By-Laws of the Institute. The Council elects the administrative and editorial officers, and is called to advise and vote about the budget, the publishing choices, the IMS meetings and lectures and other important aspects of the activity of the Institute.

The term of Sonia Petrone in the IMS Council began on August 2, 2011 and will end on July 9, 2014.
