After 27 Years of Teaching in Copenhagen, Bocconi Is the Choice of Nicolai Foss

HE TAUGHT FOR NEARLY THREE DECADES AT THE COPENHAGEN BUSINESS SCHOOL WHERE HE HAS ALSO BEEN A HEAD OF DEPARTMENT. BUT HIS HOME IS NOW THE DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY

After 181 journal articles, 101 book chapters and 23 books and after 27 years at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS), it is time for Nicolai Foss to change and to bring his knowledge and experience to the Department of Management and Technology of Bocconi University, where he's been teaching since September 2016. "I have taught in the Bocconi Ph.D program many times, and as such have followed the development of the University. I am very impressed with its strong move towards research excellence, so I decided that if I had to change university this would be the best place to go to. In addition, I love Italy! ", says the new Full Professor of Organization Theory and Human Resource Management.

In addition to his 27 years of teaching at CBS, the professor has held part-time and visiting professorships at several universities worldwide. He is a panel member of the European Research Council, serves as member of the Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society, and is a member of the Academia Europaea. "I am also the founder of the Center, now Department of Strategic Management and Globalization at the Copenhagen Business School”, he says. "It was created in 2005 and I served as its Director until 2015".

But this is not enough to describe his rich curriculum. Foss’ work has been published in several international journals, like the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies. He has published books with leading publishers, such as Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. Moreover, the academic was one of the founders of the Danish Research Unit for Industrial Dynamics and a co-founder of the industry-funded Center for Policy Studies. And when you ask him whether he has some time off and what he likes to do, he says: “I actually read a lot, particularly in political philosophy and cognitive science. I also have passion for biking and scubadiving.  I also try to play jazz guitar, which is extremely challenging. However, I am fascinated by jazz because it is like research: there are fundamental rules to be respected, but within those rules there is a lot of room for exploration”.
