An Honorary Doctorate to Alfonso Gambardella

The Director of Bocconi's Department of Management and Technology was awarded by the LMU Munich School of Business for his outstanding scientific achievement

On Tuesday, 3 December, Prof. Alfonso Gambardella, Director of Bocconi's Department of Management and Technology, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the LMU Munich School of Business «for his outstanding scientific achievements in Management- including the launch of a new research field (Markets for Technology). The award is also motivated by his remarkable institutional contributions in building the strategy and broader management community in Europe, and for bringing scientific knowledge to practice and education», as the official motivation states.

In his honorary lecture at the awarding ceremony, Prof. Gambardella analyzed recent research developments in strategic management. «Strategic management is emerging as an autonomous discipline», he said, «with implications for sustainability, innovation and managers' ability to make decisions». Prof. Gambardella also invited Management scholars to combine rigor and relevance in their research.

The LMU Munich School of Management confers the honorary doctorate title and award for excellent academic achievements in the fields of management, finance, accounting and marketing. Some of the recent recipients of this prestigious award include Eric von Hippel (MIT, 2004), Eli M. Noam (Columbia, 2006) and Josef Zechner (Vienna, 2007).
