Two Awards from ASA to Alexander Kentikelenis

THE AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION ASSIGNED HIM BOTH THE CHARLES TILLY AWARD AND THE GLOBAL AND TRANSNATIONAL SOCIOLOGY BEST SCHOLARLY ARTICLE AWARD FOR AN OUTSTANDING ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN 2019

An outstanding article on the rise of the Washington Consensus policies in the 1980s earned Alexander Kentikelenis, Assistant Professor at Bocconi’s Department of Social and Political Sciences, two awards for best article published in 2019 from two different sections of the American Sociological Association. “The Making of Neoliberal Globalization: Norm Substitution and the Politics of Clandestine Institutional Change” (American Journal of Sociology, Volume 104, Number 6, co-authored with Sarah Babb, Boston College) won both the Charles Tilly Best Article Award for the best article in comparative and historical sociology and the Global and Transnational Sociology Best Scholarly Article Award.

“In the 1980s”, Prof. Kentikelenis says, “international organizations set up to support post-war liberal order were refashioned to become leading promoters of free markets. Our research examined how this happened in the context of the International Monetary Fund. Drawing on insights from political science, sociology and organization studies, our work documented how the United States Treasury Department engineered this transformation.”

“This article forms part of my broader project on the globalization of free markets in the 1980s, drawing on a battery of newly-declassified archival material from the governments of the U.S., the U.K. and Germany, and the IMF,” Prof. Kentikelenis commented. “I am deeply honored that the early fruit of this work received recognition by the American Sociological Association.”
