, by Fabio Todesco
The American Economic Association presents the acknowledgement to a small number of foreign economists of distinction

Eliana La Ferrara, Fondazione Romeo ed Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Development Economics at Bocconi, is one of the four recipients of the American Economic Association (AEA) Foreign Honorary Members Award 2021. The award is presented to foreign economists of distinction. Honorees are elected by the American Economic Association's Executive Committee.

A scholar of development economics and scientific Director of the Bocconi Laboratory for Effective Anti-Poverty Policies, Professor La Ferrara is a Past President of the European Economic Association (EEA). In 2020 she received the Birgit Grodal Award, a prize bestowed every even numbered year by EAA to a female economist for significant contributions to the profession.

Per Krusell (Sweden), Lucrezia Reichlin (Italy), and Manuel Trajtenberg (Israel) are the other new Foreign Honorary Members.

AEA started to present the acknowledgement in 1976 and the number of current Foreign Honorary Members is only 48.

Before Professors La Ferrara and Reichlin, the only Italian who had received the award was Guido Tabellini, Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Political Economics at Bocconi, in 2016.
