Anna Grandori Receives the 2022 EURAM Edith Penrose Award for Trailblazing Researchers

THE AWARD IS GIVEN BY THE EUROPEAN ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT AND INSEAD TO RESEARCHERS WHO HAVE CHALLENGED THE STATE OF THE ART AND PROPOSED NEW APPROACHES IN MANAGEMENT

Anna Grandori, Full Professor at Bocconi’s Department of Management and Technology, received the Edith Penrose Award, presented by the European Academy of Management (EURAM) and INSEAD for taking a step forward in decision making and governance research, configuring what the motivation described as a contribution to an “epistemic shift in management.”

Specifically, Professor Grandori “opened-up a new perspective on decision making, both challenging and complementing Herbert Simon’s ‘satisficing’,” EURAM’s motivation says. She took the paradigm of decision making to a wider model that, in the course of being heuristic, is also epistemically sound, similar to the logic of scientific discovery.

Building on those new decision-making microfoundations, Professor Grandori also revisited the theory of the firm, prospecting governance structures and systems  giving space not only to representation of interests, but also to knowledge and ‘knowing for deliberating’  principles,  similar to those present in our constitutions.

“These contributions were inspirational for many management researchers interested in the status and mission of firms, a theme particularly important today in Europe,” the EURAM motivation continues.

The 2022 prize was co-assigned to another Italian scholar, Professor Giovanni Dosi, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, and is the first time that the prize has gone to European scholars.
