Donato Masciandaro Awarded with a Prize for Mediterranean Culture

THE AWARD FROM THE CARICAL FOUNDATION AIMS TO FOSTER DIALOGUE AND UNDERSTANDING OF MEDITERRANEAN CULTURES, INCLUDING THEIR CURRENT DAY IMPLICATIONS

Donato Masciandaro, Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Economics of Financial Regulation at Bocconi and a member of the Department of Economics, was awarded in the Special Section of the Prize for Mediterranean Culture, conferred by the Carical Foundation, for his career based on research and teaching activities focused on several strands, including: monetary policy, financial supervision and regulation, and illegal financial markets. The three strands are important for the role of regulation and institutions that determine the macroeconomic performance of an area - hence the relevance to the Mediterranean as well.

On the same occasion, Zakia Seddiki, widow of Luca Attanasio, the Italian Ambassador killed in Congo in February 2021 and Bocconi Alumnus, was also honored in the Civil Society Section. Seddiki was honored for her distinguished work in favor of dialogue between different cultural expressions.

“Major civilizations were born in the Mediterranean, which is historically a meeting point of peoples and civilizations,” Professor Masciandaro commented. “The past is important to build the future; the more we know about different cultures, the less widespread conflicts will be. I found it very inspiring to attend the awards ceremony, where I met some of the many people who are committed to promotion and dialogue between different cultures, including Zakia Seddiki, Mrs. Attanasio.”

The Mediterranean Culture Prize, now in its 16th year, aims to foster dialogue and understanding of Mediterranean cultures, including their topical implications. The call for entries has seven sections and is judged by an international panel chaired by Mario Bozzo, former President of the Foundation.
