Peter Pope's Career Celebrated

, by Andrea Costa
EAA's most prestigious award honors the Bocconi academic's research achievements

The European Accounting Association (EAA) has assigned this year's Anthony G. Hopwood Award for Academic Leadership to Peter F. Pope of Bocconi's Department of Accounting, jointly with Martin Walker of the University of Manchester. This award, EEA's most prestigious one, is intended to honor the "production of a significant body of work published over the candidate's career, judged to have made a distinct and valuable contribution to the advancement of accounting thought."

The award motivation states that "Peter Pope and Martin Walker have made significant and enduring contributions to our understanding of accounting and capital markets and to the continued development of the European accounting research community. (...) Through their work in developing young researchers, and in generating and overseeing new understandings of the role of corporate reporting in capital markets, they have contributed enormously to the success of the European accounting academic community today and going forward into the future."

According to Peter Pope, "Anthony Hopwood was a visionary thinker and hugely influential global leader in accounting research. To be selected by my peers across Europe for an award in his memory is a very special moment in my career. Even more so because it comes in the year I am required to retire from Bocconi. But, at the end of the day this award is just for doing an important job that I love and try to do to the best of my ability. To receive the Anthony Hopwood Award is not a signal to stop. I plan to continue contributing to academic accounting, doctoral education and research, for many years to come."

The European Accounting Association (EAA) is an academic association that "supports high-quality accounting research, teaching and knowledge exchange with practice."
