Top Finance Scholars at Bocconi for the New Frontiers in Banking Conference

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN SYSTEMS AND THE NEW RISKS FOR BANKS ARE AMONG THE TOPICS OF THE EVENT, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STUDIES. GARY GORTON IS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER

The state of the Banking Union, a comparison between the banking systems of the European Union and the United States, the systemic risks to which credit institutions are exposed, and the role of governance are the major issues that will be addressed at Bocconi, on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 March, at the international conference New Frontiers in Banking: From Corporate Governance to Risk Management. The conference has been organized by the University's Baffi-Carefin Centre for Applied Research on International Markets, Banking, Finance and Regulation with the scholarly journal The Review of Financial Studies (one of the Top-3 in the field) in collaboration with Università La Sapienza in Rome.

"The prestige of The Review of Financial Studies and the appeal of an international conference now in its third edition has meant that we received 200 papers, from which a committee of top finance scholars has selected the 15 that will be presented," says Stefano Caselli, one of the three members of the Organizing Committee along with Francesca Cornelli (London Business School, next dean of the Kellogg School of Management) and Marina Brogi (Università La Sapienza).

The debate on the European and American systems focuses on the different trajectories that the authorities have traced in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007. "In the United States, banks have been restructured with public money, with the result that today they are in good health and contribute to the economic growth of their country," says Caselli.

The issue of risk can have unexpected facets. "While most people think of non-performing loans", says Caselli, "recent news shows that other risks, such as money laundering and cyberattacks, are becoming increasingly concrete".

Keynote speaker of the conference will be Gary Gorton (Yale School of Management, pictured above), while the late morning of Friday 29 will be dedicated to a round table moderated by Stefano Caselli with Massimo Della Ragione (Goldman Sachs), Andrea Munari (BNL, BNP Paribas Group), Fabrizio Saccomanni (Unicredit), Davide Serra (Algebris) and Anneli Tuominen (ESMA).
