From Intelligence to AI and from Art to Artifice

THE FIFTH EDITION OF SCIENZANUOVA, A SEMINAR OF RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION ON THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF MODERN SCIENCES, RETURNS TO MERANO

Today there are artificial intelligences that, having analyzed an artist's production, are able to transform a photograph into a work by Van Gogh or write a sonnet in the style of Shakespeare. In its fifth edition that, after the online one in 2020, returns to the traditional venue of Merano from July 26 to 31, Scienza Nuova proposes a reflection on Art and artifice ⃓ The creative process between philosophy, physics, mathematics and artificial intelligence.
 
“The term 'art' that appears in the title presupposes human creativity, while the artifice produced by artificial intelligence is a reproduction,” says Gino Zaccaria, theoretical philosopher at Bocconi and co-founder (with Ivo De Gennaro) and scientific co-director of the seminar of research and experimentation on the fundamental concepts of modern sciences.
 
Artificial intelligence itself could be interpreted as an attempt to reproduce, or imitate, or simulate human intelligence which, however, takes the definition of intelligence for granted.
 
Among the topics of the seminar is the process that, through the Turing test, led to the concept of intelligent machine or robot and reflections on the art of Paul Klee and Umberto Boccioni. CLICK HERE for the program.
 
Specialists in artificial intelligence thus become part of what Professor Zaccaria himself has defined as “a context of dialogical research. This does not start from an idea of subordination of some sciences with respect to others, nor aims at unlikely convergences, but wants, on the contrary, to bring out the differences”, to which an audience made up of students, recent graduates and PhD students of various disciplines, from different Italian universities, is exposed. The organizations that have promoted the annual seminar, including Bocconi's ASK Center, are joined this year by the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica and the ISI Foundation.
