International Economic Law: Bocconi Hosts the SIEL Global Conference

FROM 7 TO 9 JULY, THE CONFERENCE WILL ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC GOVERNANCE, AT A TIME WHEN THE UNITED STATES IS ALSO RETURNING TO MULTILATERALISM

In July 2018, at the biennial Global Conference of the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL) in Washington, Bocconi was awarded the honor and burden of organizing the 2020 edition in Milan. By February 2020, everything was ready, including the main topic (Rethinking Global Economic Governance) and the social events that help create an international community of scholars in a discipline.

After the forced postponement due to the pandemic, Bocconi and SIEL will host the SIEL 2021 Milan Global Conference, in virtual mode, from 7 to 9 July. "The half-full glass of this situation," says Giorgio Sacerdoti, Professor Emeritus of International Law at Bocconi and Chairman of the local organizing committee, "is the ease of participation: registration costs are very low and it is easy to follow the events that interest you most, so we expect to go far beyond the 400 participants of the Washington conference. Moreover, with the Biden presidency and the return of the United States to multilateralism, the topic of global economic governance becomes even more relevant". (CLICK HERE to register)

The program of the three-day event is full of topical issues. One of the round tables of the first day will deal with global minimum tax and one of the parallel sessions will deal with the effects of COVID on international trade. Digital trade, climate change, cryptocurrencies, human rights, vaccine circulation, corruption and artificial intelligence are just some of the other topics to be discussed, always in relation to the economy and to international trade.

With several hundred members, SIEL is the reference association for scholars of international economic law, and it can also count on the participation of economists and representatives of international organizations.

The opening keynote event of the conference will be an interview by Giorgio Sacerdoti with Mario Monti, President of Bocconi University, who will leverage on his experience as European Commissioner and Italian Prime Minister to discuss the evolution of international governance.
