Zachary Parolin Obtains an ERC Starting Grant

THE ASSISTANT PROFESSOR GOT THE FUNDING FROM THE EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL FOR A PROJECT ABOUT POVERTY IN THE POST INDUSTRIAL ECONOMY

The European Research Council (ERC) has assigned a Starting Grant to Zachary Parolin, Assistant Professor at Bocconi Department of Social and Political Sciences, to have a fresh look at poverty.

His project (ExpPov - The Experience of Poverty in the Post-Industrial Economy) has the ambition to reset the field's understanding of the social mechanisms through which poverty is experienced and reproduced.

“After advances in the study of poverty in the late 20th century,” Parolin said, “most high-income countries have settled on an annual level of household income as their primary measure of poverty. In contrast, ExpPov argues that shifting socio-economic conditions in recent decades necessitate a new conceptual approach for understanding poverty and a new methodological framework for the collection of data related to the experience of poverty.”

With ExpPov, the number of ERC grants hosted by Bocconi since the inception of the European funding program rises to 44.

The ERC Starting Grants can be assigned to talented early-career researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of their PhD, a scientific track record showing real promise and an excellent research proposal. For researchers in the subsequent stages of their career, the ERC provides Consolidator Grants and Advanced Grants.
